Biographical Sketch of Dr. Abdul Rawoof Pinjari
Dr. Abdul Rawoof Pinjari is a Professor and the Chairperson of the Centre for infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP), at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). He has a Joint Faculty appointment with CiSTUP and the Department of Civil Engineering at IISc. Prior to joining IISc, he served on the faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering from 2008 to 2017.
Dr. Pinjari’s research is in mathematical modelling of human choice (consumer)behaviour in infrastructure and service systems, particularly in transportation systems. He uses choice modelling and statistical/econometric methods for travel behaviour analysis; passenger and freight travel demand modelling; public transportation systems planning; and integrated land-use and transport modelling. His contributions to multidimensional and discrete-continuous choice modelling have made way into applied research and regional transportation modelling practice. His recent research has been on: (a) modelling travel behaviour in complex travel environments, and (b) use of disparate data sources for estimating travel demand by emerging modes such as on-demand mobility as a service and integrated public transit systems. Dr. Pinjari has published close to 75 articles in peer-reviewed journals, more than 120 papers in conferences, and contributed chapters to several books in the field.
Before joining IISc, Dr. Pinjari has been actively involved in advancing the state of travel modelling practice in Florida and Texas, particularly through the development of passenger and/or freight travel forecasting systems and interactions with the respective State Departments of Transportation. He has also served as an adviser/consultant for various transportation and consumer choice modelling firms on projects involving advanced choice models.
Dr. Pinjari has served on notable leadership and service roles in the transportation research community. He is currently the Chair of the International Association for Travel Behaviour Research (IATBR), an Associate Editor of Transportation Research Part B; Editorial Board Member of Transportation, Journal of Choice Modelling, and Transportation in Developing Economies. Until recently, he was a member of the U.S. National Academies’ Transportation Research Board (TRB) committee on Transportation Demand Forecasting (ADB 40); one of the Co-Chairs of a TRB subcommittee on Integrated Transport Modelling; and a Board member of the International Steering Committee for Travel Survey Conferences (ISCTSC). He also served as a member of the Karnataka Government’s State level Task Force on Mobility; and a member of the Florida State Model Task Force and that of a U.S. Federal Highway Administration’s peer review panel.
Dr. Pinjari has a B.Tech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, M.S. from the University of South Florida, and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin; all degrees in Civil Engineering. His doctoral dissertation was awarded the 2008 Charley Wootan award for outstanding dissertation in transportation policy and planning and an Honorable mention in the competition for the 2008 Eric Pas award for best dissertation in travel behaviour research.
